Setting SMART Goals

When I mentioned “setting SMART goals” recently, someone joked in response, “As opposed to setting dumb ones?” It’s a great comment because it leads into what SMART is, and how to use it for goal setting.

SMART is an acronym for a framework, or context, for setting goals. It’s been in use in multiple industries for close to 40 years. Prior to the development of the SMART framework, businesses found themselves occasionally setting goals that were vaguely stated, unrealistic, or, if achieved, didn’t realize any business value. Those goals were ultimately demotivating (and, probably, dumb).

Goals created in the SMART framework are precisely stated, have clearly defined end products, are actionable, and move the overall effort (the larger or higher goal) forward, all in a timely fashion.
